Quick stop on the way home from Center City: had a Legacy Nor'Easter (excellent), and samples of Flying Fish BigFish 2003 and 2006 (the 2006 was astounding, one of the fruitiest beers I've ever had, downright tropical: Go Casey!). Excellent service, excellent beer, great bar.

My first trip was with my 94 year old Aunt Catherine who was in the mood for Fish N' Chips. She was delighted at the authentic meal and I was equally thrilled with my meal and we both had beers. She had me take her back at least 4 times before she passed away (fell at home - no beers) and I was more than willing. Great food (aside from the Fish & Chips) and beer selections I never knew existed outside of center city. My Aunt was so fond of this place she'd scoot right up those stairs to the 2nd floor diining area for good food and a pint. See you there.

One of Philadelphia's great neighborhood watering holes. As Johnny Brenda's is to Fishtown and McMenamin's is to Mount Airy, so is the Grey Lodge to Wissinoming. The beer selection is an outstanding rotation of Pennsylvania brews (Victory, Sly Fox, Yards, etc.) The food specialty remains the distinctive (and dirt-cheap) pizza which -- typical of Northeast Philly -- features the sauce on top of the cheese. Now comes a new element, however -- an upstairs non-smoking lounge complete with single malts and a more upscale (but still not pricey) menu. Bartenders are friendly, food is great, and there's never a dull moment for the beer lover. Location is also great -- five minutes from both I-95 and U.S. 1.

The Grey Lodge has added a second floor bar with a kitchen. Stopped in Tuesday night for one of the new rib-eye cheesesteak: great stuff. A new twist on a Philly classic, but MUCH more seriously rooted in the traditions than most other cheesesteaks that garner that description: Thick-cut meat (relatively: about 1/8"), chewy roll, (could have had a tougher outer crust, but that's me), and delicious fried onions. Then Pat forced a sampler of Thai curried mussels on me: wow. I still say the best mussels I've ever had were in Ireland, December 1989...but these came in a solid second, blowing away every mussel I've ever had since then. Sweet, clean mussels, delicious sauce with just the right heat, and a big chunk of garlic bread to sop it up with. Plus the G-Lodge beer selection? Come on! I had a Lake Placid Frostbite Pale Ale, and it was dead on. Can't beat that.

Another Friday the Firkinteenth...15! casks of real ale pouring at the Grey Lodge, and at least a third of them were phenomenal. The joint was packed, people were lined up halfway down the block waiting to get in, just to drink cask ale. The selection was amazing, the bartenders harried but never snarly, prices reasonable...and it's great on other days too. A fantastic combination of beer temple and corner bar.
